Carbon steel I beams are widely used in construction when it comes to supporting heavy loads. Beams, commonly called "I" beams because of their shape, provide excellent load support when used horizontally or vertically as columns. They are available in two configurations, the most popular of which is the wide-flange steel beam, also known as an H-beam or W-beam, with non-tapered flanges. This beam shape has a wider profile to increase horizontal strength, making it ideal for skyscrapers or as a house beam, as well as for beams for bridges, trailers, platforms, etc. Standard American beams, also known as Junior or S beams, have tapered flanges for added strength when loads are concentrated on the flanges, such as machine tool beds, hoists, cranes or a cart beam for your garage.
